Life in Corona-Ville is a little crazy! Over the past several weeks, we have all gotten creative about how to spend our quarantine time. But now, stimulus checks are starting to roll in and for those of you concerned about you or your family’s personal protection, let’s look at the top 5 ways to spend your $1200 (after you pay your bills).
- $500 – Gun. You should be able to get a good quality handgun for under $500. Remember, smaller guns have more recoil, but are more concealable. Full-sized guns have less felt recoil, but are not as concealable. If you are a first time buyer, I would suggest a full-size polymer gun.
- $200 – Ammo. Not all ammo is created equal. Ammunition comes in range of differences; calibers, performance and price will fluctuate. I suggest spending at least $200 on ammo. That is about the price of 1000 rounds of 9mm. In an ‘apocalypse’, ammo will not only help you eat and defend, but it could also become currency; “I’ll trade you one chicken for 10 rounds of 9mm”.
- $100 – Flashlight/Batteries. This should actually be the first thing you invest in; it’s inexpensive and it’s the critical to any self-defense situation, with our without a firearm. Bad guys like the dark. If you can light up the world around you, you are going to be a harder target and possibly avoid a confrontation all together! You can also use it to throw more effective strikes. And if it comes down to the firearm, it’s absolutely necessary to see what you are shooting (identify your target and don’t shoot your family member!). Don’t forget extra batteries.
- $100 – Security Cameras. The doorbell cameras are inexpensive and allow you to see, hear, and communicate with someone all from behind the security of a locked door. Plus it’s great as evidence if someone comes to your home with nefarious intention.
- $40- Tourniquet. If you are serious about preparing to be your own first responder, a dedicated med kit is a no brainer. If nothing else, make sure you have a tourniquet. They are small, light-weight, and inexpensive. Everyone in your family should carry one. Get a good one and expect to pay around $40.
If that remaining $260 bucks is burning a hole in your pocket, just wait until the next round of stimulus comes and spend it all on training. These tools are great, but without knowing how to properly apply them, they lose their effectiveness!
